Prior to my Esthetics education and Naturopathy studies, I was in the medical and dental fields for almost 20 years. I like to equate a Deep Cleansing Facial to the following:
Every four to six months most of us go to the dentist for a hygiene appointment (cleaning, prophy, etc.). That is a professional cleaning. Something you cannot and should not do at home. You receive a thorough examination & diagnosis, and certain procedures are employed to cleanse the surface of the tooth enamel and remove hardened calculus off the surface, and beneath the gum line. When done properly, the teeth and gums are clean and smooth, and restored to a healthy stasis. Now, it is your responsibility to follow your professional's advice and maintain it with proper homecare.
The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin is about the thickness of a sheet of paper. The younger we are, the faster this outer layer turns over and sheds (if the skin is healthy and functioning properly, and if you cleanse and use the correct products on your skin). As we age, this natural exfoliation process slows down exponentially and the keratinized layer of dead tissue builds up and thickens. Combine those dead skin cells with makeup, incorrect cleansing and treatment products, pollution, a bad diet, dehydration, hormones, prescription drugs, illness, etc., and you have congestion and clogged pores. Often, you will feel a topography (uneven texture and bumpiness); the skin may feel thick, look dull and flat, feel greasy and have unusual patches of irritated sloughing skin and acne; makeup goes on unevenly and your products just don't seem to work like they used to. Men may experience an increase in folliculitis or razor bumps from ingrown beard hair due to surface congestion.
Deep cleansing isn't intense scrubbing or harsh stripping of the skin. You can scrub your face, have it sandblasted & suctioned with microdermabrasion, wash and strip it, and it still feels and looks bad. A deep cleansing facial is a well thought-out cleansing procedure that involves multiple steps to cleanse, soften, unlock the cellular 'glue', break-up the protein of the deal cells, open the pores, and lift the debris off the surface and out of the pores. Done correctly, it leaves your face clean and exfoliated, smooth, brighter and even-textured, glowing and refreshed. If you receive the wrong type of facials from an inexperienced esthetician, or they are too harsh, too abrasive, or incorrect products are used - you end up with inflammation. Now, the skin has to deal with an additional problem. Congestion and inflammation. I never go from "0 to 100". Your facial is unique as you are. Everything is customized to effect the best and healthiest results, without inducing unnecessary inflammation.
Deep cleansing facials are a SPECIALIZED type of facial that is more than a regular or routine feel-good facial. Think of them as your serious quarterly facial healthcare. Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall are ideal times to have your skin's health and condition(s) assessed and re-evaluated, while making adjustments in your homecare if necessary. Regular monthly (routine) facials help the skin turn over more effectively, and help maintain the skin's health in between Deep Cleansing Facials. They stimulate circulation and move lymph fluid, blood and oxygen through the cells to restore its health. Gentle, regular facial treatments encourage collagen growth, which is the under-structure that supports the skin. Facials are a great way to relax as well.
Often I am asked what to expect after a Deep Cleansing Facial. Everyone is different and reacts differently. Most often everyone feels a much smoother surface texture. The skin is soft, hydrated, and it glows. Blood circulation will be increased, and you may experience a mild pink-ness to the skin from it. That usually subsides within a day. With the exception of severe congestion, clogged greasy pores and blackheads are appreciably decreased, and the white waxy sebum that you see coming out of the pores has been cleansed out. If you've a lot of built up dead skin, the surface appears brighter and more uniform in tone.
Purging: As a rule of thumb, you should not experience negative side effects such as heavy breakouts post-facial. The exception to the rule is if you have deeply congested pores and acne, have extremely sensitive skin or allergies, or it has been a long time in-between facials. When the thick, dead surface tissue is cleansed off, the pores are now free to expel their contents, instead of staying under the skin and causing bumps and blackheads. Think of a volcano (pore) that has been capped-off for a long while... the contents builds up and can't escape. When this 'cap' is loosened and opened up, the contents (pus, dirt, waxy sebum and oil, makeup, dead cells) are free to come out. These may result in little whiteheads and or/white waxy threads as the pores empty. Simply keep the skin cleansed and treated gently according to your Esthetician's homecare advice.
