It concerns me when clients and patients spend their valuable time and hard earned money for professional skincare, education, and products - and are not compliant. I wouldn't be doing my job professionally if I didn't make product recommendations, give you science-based advice, and educate you. Home care by you, is essential.
Imagine going to your dental cleaning appointment... Your hygienist thoroughly examines your mouth, tongue, gums, and teeth. She scales the enamel beneath and between your gums, probes for recession and pocketing, polishes and flosses. She charts any changes and may take necessary x-rays. She will make appropriate suggestions for home care, schedule you for special dental treatments, and return visits.
So, you go home and do nothing until the next 6-month visit; maybe you put it off a few months... Or, you don't want to floss even if you were asked to - it's inconvenient. Or, you do not want to rinse with that special rinse to help your gums. While you are at it, why bother brushing at bedtime - rinse with a little water - or skip a few brushings. Huh?
See the picture?
When you come in for professional skincare, you receive the latest, most effective, results-oriented skincare and educational advice. Specific products are recommended for your individual skin concerns. As a professional honest business woman, it is wrong to offer you things you don't need -and- wrong NOT to offer products and therapies you do need. I am NOT in a vendor's back pocket, trying to sell you an over-priced packaged protocol. Therefore, I will only recommend particular skincare treatments and products necessary for keeping your skin healthy and protected. Your success is just as important to me as it is to you.
There are specific criterion that must be in place to achieve and maintain healthy skin. Virtually no one is a text-book example. You are an individual, and your skin has specific things going on with it. Unhealthy skin usually is a result of years of different levels of physical health and hormonal changes, improper skincare, sun damage, environment, stress, and neglect. NOTHING works a miracle overnight. NEVER let anyone tell you otherwise. It took a while to get that way, and to effect healthy results, it takes time to bring your skin back to its best condition.
Let's look at acne. The goal is to reduce inflammation and infection, encourage the skin to exfoliate properly and not clog, promote healing; and to prevent scarring, pigmentation, and future breakouts. After your facial, please do not go home and start adding your own corrections to the situation unless advised to do so. You can potentially damage your skin. Applying Rx and OTC products at the wrong time, scrubbing, picking & squeezing can ADD to inflammation, make the acne worse, and cause scarring. More 'drying' doesn't necessarily encourage healing, but rather delays the process and could cause scarring. Overdoing anything can cause a great imbalance in the skin's cellular matrix/pH. When this is out of balance the skin's system becomes 'confused' and goes into hyper-drive in the dermis (deep living tissue where new skin grows) trying to get it back to normal. Continual incorrect product use, or over-use can exacerbate this situation causing continual dermal inflammation. You may experience some excess dryness, oiliness, breakouts or sensitivity. Keep tormenting the skin, and you can whip up some nasty, hard-to-get-rid-of red, pink or dark pigmentation and scarring, as well as delay healing. Given the proper time and conditions, estheticians work with you to aid in this healing recovery process without the inflammatory side effects.
Here's another example: You think you have dry skin, and products don't seem to work anymore. A great problem is congested skin and improper products. Many skin types do not turn over properly; it builds up and leaves a thick, matte, dull complexion which absorbs light instead of reflecting it. Your face looks dull, the color is not healthy; lines and imperfections are exacerbated, and it gives you an aging look. Dead surface skin cells have a natural tendency to 'glue' themselves to the surface. When you improperly cleanse and protect with the wrong products and do not exfoliate properly, your skin may seem flaky and even peel. Add a thick gluey layer of a greasy moisturizer and makeup over top, and you've added to the problem. Your skin is now so congested it cannot function freely, external hydration is hard to achieve, and moisturizers have now become your enemy. This is generally not something that you can scrub off, sand-blast off with inflammatory microdermabrasion, or easily wash away.
New fresh skin cells are round and plump, with a dewy 'fluid' inside. They are translucent and give the face its natural glow. (Think of a young child. No makeup, no treatments - it's naturally healthy skin.) As the cells migrate toward the surface, they dry-out and flatten. This is just one reason where esthetic services are so valuable in your skincare regimen. Estheticians provide professional services to help you recognize and treat these conditions effectively. Your participation in correct home care helps achieve and maintain healthy skin.
Back full circle to the dental hygiene visit... They provide the services and tools to address and correct the health and care of your teeth and gums. Generally, things you can't or shouldn't do at home. Yet, those 2-4 visits a year can be essential in the management of your dental health. The same applies to quality professional esthetic services.
