That blackhead, whitehead, clogged pore, cyst may rear its ugly head on the surface of the skin, BUT just because you see it on the surface, does NOT mean the pore comes straight up and out. Pores can exit on the surface at an angle or even perpendicular to the skin's surface. When you press and squeeze clogged pores, you may actually be PUSHING the pus, oil, and infection deeper, and most likely cause the pore walls to blow-out causing a bigger, wider, deeper problem. This may cause scaring and pock marks. Scrubbing and harsh exfoliation does not remove blackheads well. It may only further complicate a pre-existing condition.
Proper preparation of the skin is necessary before implementing extractions. Cleansing, steaming, enzymes, some ultra-sound treatments, and masquing help soften the tissue and make it more pliable and softens the waxy plugs. Extractions should not be more than slightly uncomfortable, as in the instance of an inflamed acneic cyst 'on a nerve'. If your practitioner is pressing hard, pushing deeply against the bone, or re-working the same pore over and over, make them STOP! This type of extracting a pore causes trauma to the underlying tissue. Properly pre-treated skin will easily allow the contents to empty with gentle pressure. Sometimes just a gently raking, by gliding along an area with the edge of an extractor is all that is needed to express small clogs and waxy sebum from pores. A professional experienced esthetician can determine what pores can and can not be extracted. By visual examination and palpation under magnification, your esthetician can decide what the most effective, safe treatment is best. While you may have had 'extractions' during facials at other spas, and they have their place; there are other equally effective ways to clean out pores with less trauma to the tissue. Let your esthetician determine if extractions are best for your skin type and condition - please do not ask for them - your skincare professional knows best. The best course of action is to keep the skin healthy with proper homecare and professional facials on a regular basis, thus avoiding congestion and clogs.
